Brain Injury And Closed Head Injury

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a complex injury to the brain that can result in a wide range of symptoms and disabilities. The resulting injury causes impairment to cognitive (thinking), emotional, and/or physical functioning. Depending on the severity of the injury, impairment may be partial or total and temporary or permanent.

Traumatic Brain Injury Caused By Auto Accident Or Fall

Some major causes of TBI are automobile accidents, motorcycle accidents, truck accidents, slip-and-falls,  workplace injuries, medical negligence, shaken baby syndrome, accidents from recreational sports and falls from balconies, porches, or decks.

A Brain Injury Might Be Invisible But Could Have Enormous Impact

A closed head injury or traumatic brain injury might not be immediately apparent based upon a physical inspection. Because a brain injury can occur without a noticeable physical impact, traumatic brain injuries can be difficult to prove to a jury. When presenting a traumatic brain injury case to a jury, it is important to illustrate in detail for a jury the issues that the injured person is experiencing. Although an injured person might seem normal upon first meeting them, the changes to their personality, speech, memory, and attitudes might have been permanently and drastically altered. At The Greene Law Firm, our attorneys understand the nuances associated with presenting a traumatic brain injury case to a judge or jury.

Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms And Closed Head Injury Symptoms

Physical impairments that are a possible result of TBI include impairments in speech, vision, hearing, and impairments of the other senses. Other impairments include headaches, fatigue, sleeping more than usual, lack of fine motor coordination, spasticity of muscles, paresis or paralysis of one or both sides, and/or balance and other gait impairments. Cognitive impairments include short- and long-term memory deficits, impaired concentration, slowness of thinking, and limited attention span. Also, traumatic brain injuries can result in impairments to perception, communication, reading and writing skills, planning, and judgment. Psychosocial, behavioral or emotional impairments include fatigue, mood swings, denial, self-centeredness, anxiety, depression, lowered self-esteem, and restlessness. If any of the above symptoms have been present in a loved one following a traumatic brain injury, please contact our firm to discuss these symptoms and the injury in more detail.

Treatment Options

The first step is to fully diagnosis the traumatic brain injury. Many times in order to fully diagnose a traumatic brain injury, a PET scan will be necessary, along with additional neuropsychological testing and other medical testing. After determining the full nature of the impairment, it is important to actively begin the rehabilitation process, which will likely involve physician appointments, physical therapy, occupational and speech therapists, neuropsychologists, social workers, therapeutic recreational specialists and nurses. Additionally, educational and vocational rehabilitation might be necessary.

Types Of Traumatic Brain Injury

There are several different types of brain injuries, depending on how and where the brain is injured.
Cerebral contusions are bruises on the brain tissue. Cerebral contusions typically occur at the surface of the brain, near the skull and occur when the brain makes contact with the skull. This type of brain injury is a common brain injury that people sustain when involved in a car accidents. People that have sustained a cerebral contusion brain injury in an automobile collision can take longer to realize the full range of symptoms and impairments they are experiencing following the collision.

Diffuse anoxal injury (DAI) can occur when trauma causes the brain to move and stretch in such a way that the axons rip apart from each other and from their neurons. As the axons are ripped away from each other, the axons die, which disrupts neural connections and inhibits brain function. This type of injury can have serious and devastating results and can even cause death or comas. This type of traumatic brain injury is very frequent.
